As a journalist covering floods and river communities throughout the Midwest, I spent countless hours on levees, riverbanks, and backwaters during some of the worst insect conditions imaginable. As much as I enjoyed telling the stories of families, farmers, and communities impacted by rising floodwaters, I quickly learned firsthand how challenging life outdoors along the river can be.
