Candle Care

Candle Care Instructions

Welcome to Quincy Candle Co. To ensure you get the best experience from our hand-poured candles, we've put together this comprehensive guide. Proper care will help you enjoy the full beauty and fragrance of our candles while also ensuring safety.

1. Trim the Wick

Before lighting your candle each time, trim the wick to 1/4 inch. This helps to promote an even burn, steady flame, and limit sooting or mushrooming of the wick. Use a wick trimmer or scissors to make a clean cut.

2. Burning for the First Time

When lighting your candle for the first time, allow it to burn for at least 2-3 hours, or until the melt pool reaches the edges of the container. This prevents tunneling and ensures an even burn throughout the candle's life.

3. Safe Burning Practices

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Keep candles away from drafts, vents, fans, and air currents.
  • Always burn candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
  • Keep burning candles out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Do not burn candles for more than 4 hours at a time.

4. Avoiding Soot

To minimize soot, always trim the wick to 1/4 inch before lighting. If you notice black smoke, extinguish the candle, trim the wick, and then relight. Burning candles away from drafts also helps reduce soot production.

5. Extinguishing the Candle

To safely extinguish your candle, use a candle snuffer to prevent hot wax splatter. Alternatively, you can dip the wick into the melted wax and then straighten it again, which helps to eliminate smoking and readies the wick for the next use. Avoid blowing out candles, as this can cause hot wax to splatter.

6. Storage

Store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and discoloration. Keep the lid on the candle when not in use to keep the fragrance fresh and prevent dust from accumulating on the surface.

7. Proper Disposal

When only 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom of the candle, it’s time to stop using it. Burning a candle when less than 1/2 inch of wax remains can cause the glass to overheat and crack. Dispose of the remaining wax and clean the container for reuse or recycling.

8. Recycling and Reuse

Our candle containers are designed to be reusable. Once your candle has finished, you can clean out the remaining wax by placing the container in the freezer for a few hours. The wax should pop out easily, and you can wash the container with warm soapy water. Use your clean containers for plants, storage, or as decorative pieces.

9. Maximizing Fragrance Throw

To get the most out of the candle's fragrance, keep it in a smaller, enclosed area. Allow the candle to burn for long enough to form a full melt pool, which helps in releasing the scent evenly.

10. General Safety Tips

  • Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches, and debris at all times.
  • Avoid moving a burning candle. Make sure the candle is completely extinguished and the wax is solid before handling.
  • Never use water to extinguish a candle.
